Kids can have fun making random prints of fruit and vegetables or using the different shapes to create interesting images both on paper and fabric. It is a great way to learn about them while having fun and being creative!

What do you need?

  • Paper or fabric
  • Fruits (apples, pears, oranges, lemons, bananas)
  • Vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, potatoes, carrots, corn, mushrooms, bok choy, brussel sprouts, snow peas)
  • Tempera or poster paint (for paper)
  • Acrylic paint or fabric paint (for fabric)
  • Chopping board
  • Knife
  • Plastic plates or trays

  1. Gather some fruit and veggies, wash them and wipe them dry.
  2. Prepare your fruit and vegetables: separate broccoli and cauliflowers into florets, cut Brussel sprouts either lengthwise or crosswise. Trim off the base of the bok choy and discard the leaves (you can cook them). Slice potatoes and carrots or cut them into shapes like stars and flowers, slice round mushrooms in half and slice crosswise in half bell peppers, discarding the seeds. Cut the corn in half or skewer with a stick to make an handle. Cut pear lengthwise and apples both crosswise or lengthwise. Cut oranges, lemons and bananas crosswise in half.
  3. Prepare your paper or fabric. Put different colours of paint inĀ  shallow plastic plates.
  4. Dip a fruit or veggie in paint, making sure the whole bottom is evenly coated.
  5. Shake off any excess.
  6. Press the veggie onto the paper / fabric.
  7. Lift the veggie to reveal a beautiful coloured print.
  8. Wipe off the paint from a fruit or veggie before dipping it into another colour.
  9. Repeat the process with different fruit and vegetables and have fun discovering unique prints each of them makes.
  10. Make beautiful patterns, overlapping prints (ideal to decorate t-shirts or aprons) or compose a picture, using different shapes to make landscapes, animals, houses and people.
