Category: seasonal specials

Come to the sixth annual Sweetcorn Fayre in Arreton this weekend, enjoy some countryside fun and games, eat great food, drink real ale and raise money for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice and Ventnor Lions Club.

Fun and Games

The Sweetcorn Fayre is home to some seriously quirky countryside fun.  Have you ever played Cow Bingo?  Thought not!  It's not a lot like bingo, but there is a cow...
How about following the Arreton Snail Derby?  The runners and riders are more like slimers and sliders, but snail trainer extraordinaire Lee has been putting the molluscs through their paces and we can promise you nail-biting competition, fast-paced action and immoderate hilarity.  Or possibly not,  but we can promise that the terrier racing will be really fast!  If you have a terrier, bring him along to join the racing and maybe win a rosette.
If this sounds too exciting, then have a go with the coconut shy, Nail-It, skittles or hook-a-duck.  Listen to the live broadcasts from IW Radio.  Go inside the IW Fire and Rescue smoke-filled house; watch the falcons and hawks from Wight Falconry; admire Bob and Jeff, the giant Clydesdale horses (Sunday only); and enjoy the polished brass and unmistakeable aroma of the steam engines.  You can even have a go getting lost in Farmer Jack's amazing maize maze.
Browse the craft and produce stalls, and maybe buy some gifts - plants, bags, photographs, paintings, jewellry and homemade cakes are all at the Sweetcorn Fayre.

Food Galore

Ben and Hanna will be roasting sweetcorn, and there is plenty of fresh cobs to buy in Farmer Jack's.  There will be a giant sweetcorn fritter made every day at 2pm - at more than 6 foot wide there will be enough for everyone!  Or you can made your own sweetcorn fritter at 1pm.
Think you're fast?  There is a sweetcorn speed-eating competition each day at 3.30pm, and the fastest muncher over the weekend will win Wightlink tickets.
There will be barbecued sausages and brilliant burgers to eat, and you can watch butcher Tom demonstrating how he makes his award-winning bangers in the shop.  Finish off with a nice cup of tea and a homemade cake from Miss Dotty, Mrs Buckett or the Mums from Arreton school.
If you fancy something stronger, then the Dairyman's Daughter is hosting a beer festival with more than 30 real ales and ciders.

Join Us!

The Sweetcorn Fayre covers the entire Arreton Old Village site.  Entry is only £2.50 per person (children under 12 are free) - if you only want to visit Farmer Jack's, show your Ice or Farmer Jack's card at the gate.   Don't forget that all profits from the weekend go to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice and Ventnor Lions Club - last year we raised over £8,000!
Parking for the Fayre is in the Arreton Old Village field, with overspill parking near the Arreton Community Hall.  Look out for the Ventnor Lions, who will be directing traffic.  If you come by bus, then the stop for Route 8 is right outside Arreton Old Village.
